More Is Available Through Salvation Than You Think

God wanted it to be that we, His children, are filled with the Holy Spirit. I love it when I hear God is moving among the Presbyterians, or the Roman Catholics, or the Orthodox, or the Lutherans. I get excited because in order to reach a billion soul harvest, He needs to touch people all over this world.

There will not be just one part of God’s church that’s touched by revival. Scriptures like Acts 2:17, 33 and 10:45, Joel 2:28, and Romans 5:5 shows us that God has poured out His Spirit on all flesh, which means that we can expect more and more activity of the Holy Spirit all around the world. It doesn’t matter whether a denomination has been open or closed—God is going to “bust in” and make Himself known.

In the finished work of Christ and in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, we see the powerful fulfillment of the ancient celebrations of Passover, the Day of Atonement, the Feast of Tabernacles, and the Feast of Pentecost. God has been working over the ages to communicate the power of what Jesus did on the cross, and it’s a wonderful thing to discover that there is more to learn, more to experience.

Come with me to John 7:37-39 which takes place after the resurrection but before the day of Pentecost. It reads, “On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, Whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified” (original emphasis from NKJV).

The cross is about more than getting us saved. Jesus came to initiate and ratify the New Covenant with His Own blood. He wanted to get us saved so that we could advance His kingdom. The cross is about taking dominion over what Adam and Eve had lost, triumphing over sin, death, and satan. He is building His kingdom to be on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10), and He is fashioning a people who would advance it in power (Matthew 11:11-15, Luke 16:16), who hear His voice and honor His presence (John 10:3-5, 1 Chronicles 16:27-29).

One of the primary reasons Jesus died on the cross was to establish this New Covenant where God would no longer write these laws on stone tablets but He would write them upon our hearts. We would be His charismatic people in the sense of the Spirit that was once just upon kings, priests and prophets in the Old Covenant would now be upon every believer. Again: He wanted His children to be filled with His Spirit.

Our ability to partner with what God is doing throughout the earth today is rooted in the cross. This is not about any human being’s ability except the One Who is God and Who became human and Who is the Mediator between God and man. What Jeremiah and Ezekiel prophesied is now a reality: The Holy Spirit has been poured out.

People on the Day of Pentecost were accused of being drunk not because they were drunk but because they were acting “drunk” due to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. I know that some drunks are crying drunks. Some drunks are laughing drunks. And some drunks are fall-down drunks. But the New Wine does not leave you with a hangover. It does not destroy your family. It does not bring shame. It lifts you up, makes you whole, and gives you a joy you didn’t have before. The manifestation that can look like drunkenness is recorded throughout Church history, and is nothing new. When we are overwhelmed with the manifest presence of God, our bodies cannot handle it, and it results in the physical manifestations of history’s revivals: shaking, quaking, laughing, weeping, falling down, etc.

A sign of the Holy Spirit is extravagant joy. Also gratitude—endless gratitude, gratitude for everything (verse 20). This eliminates pouting, murmuring and complaining, self-pity, bitterness, worry, discouragement, and pessimism. Another sign of the Holy Spirit is selflessly loving one another and taking care of each other’s needs (verse 21). To this we can also add a bold witness from Acts 2:4; 4:8, 31; and 13:9. No one can fail to be bold and eager to witness when the Spirit is producing in them overflowing joy, endless gratitude, and selfless love. We need to be filled with the Spirit. Let’s seek and pursue Him!

Ephesians 5:18 says, “Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.” (emphasis mine)

So how do you get filled with the Spirit? The same way a person gets drunk with wine: You drink it. Lots of it. Drink deep of the goodness of God. Jesus said, “The Father longs to give the Holy Spirit to all who ask.” So ask the Father in faith. In fact, the scripture above in Ephesians is literally translated as “…be continually being filled with the Holy Spirit.”

What a wonderful command to have been given: to be continually pressing into God for more, trusting that this continual infilling is empowering us to partner with His Kingdom’s advance. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 12:13, “We were all…made to drink of one Spirit.” Jesus said, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as the scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”

In order to be filled with the Spirit, we must drink Him. Lots of Him. Some practical ways to drink of the Spirit include worshipping, praying, meditating on Him, reading His Word, and simply asking. Take time to get quiet, to both “set your mind on things above” and to hear the internal voice of the Lord. This is active waiting; it’s a pressing in to ask Him to fill you afresh. To even baptise you in His presence again and again.

Watch and listen for more on my attitude of surrender and the experience I had the second time I was filled with Holy Spirit on the front row of my Baptist church of 14 years when a Vineyard man was speaking, as well as testimonies of the mighty moves of Holy Spirit I’ve recently seen.

Action Point: Pray this prayer with me: Father, in the Name of Jesus, we ask that You would come and do things to us and then through us. Consume us. We pray for the golden tongues of fire to come upon us. We pray for every person who in private has cried out, “God, come and touch me” that You would reveal in public what they asked for in private. We pray the Holy Spirit would begin to work to draw us even closer to You. Give us a greater sense of power working in us. Fill us with Your love and power—a baptism of love and a baptism of power. Amen.

P.S. God is moving in amazing ways around the world, and year after year we see youth and young adults on our trips become ignited by the fires of genuine revival. We see them become grounded in knowing what God says about them and what is possible for their lives. I would like to personally invite ages 14-29 to Youth Power Invasion (YPI) this summer. This two-week trip will be led by myself along with Tom Jones and Justin Allen. YPI is an especially good event for youth and young adults who are already asking, “What can God do in me? What can He do through me? Who am I made to be, and what can my life look like?” It is an opportunity like no other for them to be trained and released into ministry.

This is not your typical short-term missions trip; it is a jumpstart into a life of miracles, a launch into seeing the world through new eyes, and a deep dive into the fullness of what Jesus purchased for His people. This is the perfect time for them to find out who they are and what God can do through them. It’s gonna be big!
